Open Trenching at Owls Hatch, Ovenden Allworks, Case study

Ovenden Allworks were awarded the contract for the trenching works at the Owl’s Hatch Solar farm, Herne Bay, Kent by main contractor British Solar Renewables.

This project covering 212 acres is one of the UK’s largest solar farms, generating enough power for 14,000 homes.

This contract included the excavation of around 8,000m of differing sized trenches around the site, that had to be backfilled in stages. This required a high level of co-operation between Ovenden Allworks and the other sub contractors. Emphasised by the fact the job was on tight programme with a strict deadline.

Ovenden Allworks also undertook a range of civil engineering works on the site, including reinforcing the entrances, installing new drainage for the run off water. Plus placing concrete culverts for the cables through the roads and compound areas.

New access roads, approx 7,500m2, were constructed from recycled materials supplied by Ovenden Tippers, on geotextile and geogrid mesh to strengthen as the underlying ground was very weak

Site manager Terry Watson said the job was challenging due to the wet ground conditions and tight deadlines.
