LANDFILL CELL CONSTRUCTION
Client: Viridor
Ovenden Allworks Ltd were awarded the contract by Viridor Waste to construct a new sidewall liner to extend an existing waste cell at Shelford Landfill site in Canterbury.
The overlying protection soils had to be excavated to a design profile, the soils were stockpiled and reused within the site footprint.
An underliner extraction infrastructure was excavated and placed below formation to collect any migrating gases from the existing site.
A 1m layer of engineered clay was placed over the formation sourced from an onsite stockpile and covered with a HDPE liner which is fully welded at the seams to provide a continuous membrane.
The clay liner has to pass certain design criteria and the client employed a full time geotechnical engineer to carry out insitu testing.
Following placement of the liner the upper edge is secured within an anchor trench a overlying clay bund.
